AirPrint Activator

I rarely print stuff. But sometimes one needs to. I recently purchased a Brother HL2240D laser printer, which I am very pleased with so far. Laser printers do not have ink cartridges that dry up when your printer sits unused for months at a time.

When I purchased the printer, I was not thinking about the iOS AirPrint feature, so that didn’t factor into my decision. But of course I was laying on the couch, needing to print something and realized I wish I had it.

A quick search revealed a few software options for making almost any local printer compatible with AirPrint. I gave Netputing’s AirPrint Activator a go since it was free/donationware. Installation was simple, and it worked immediately. You do have to have the printer’s “app” running for it to be recognized it seems (at least mine did). Otherwise, it worked perfectly.

The current version supports Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion as well as iOS6.

Not sure why Apple chose to require printer manufacturers to include this if it can be done with a software solution for any printer. Odd.

And yes, printing from your iPhone is pretty slick.
